What is measured

Website, Builder or Agency for Carinthian SMEs

An honest comparison of the three routes, with the cost over three years, the limits of each and the answer to when a website builder really is enough.

Which route suits a small Carinthian business: builder, developer or agency?

For a one-person business with a single page and little need for change, a website builder is usually enough; as soon as appointments, inquiries or an inventory system need connecting, a developer is cheaper than the detour; a larger agency pays off once campaigns, photography and ongoing editorial work come into it. This article works the three routes through over three years, using my own prices and the Carinthian market corridor from an own survey of 24 providers.

The comparison is deliberately uncomfortable: it also says when you do not need me. Anyone who wants a business card on the internet so that the phone number can be found is spending money on a built site that would do more elsewhere.

What does each route cost over three years?

Between roughly €900 and a good €8,000, and the spread comes almost entirely from the running share, not from the starting price. Each line is the one-off amount plus 36 months of running cost, with no discounts and no assumed extra revenue.

Route One-off Per month After three years
Website builder, set up yourself €0 around €25 for the plan and the domain around €900
Landing page from a developer, with maintenance €890 €49 €2,654
Company website from a developer, with maintenance €2,400 €49 €4,164
Carinthian agency corridor €2,200 to €4,500 €30 to €100 €3,280 to €8,100

The one-off amount for the builder is zero because you do the work yourself. That is the figure missing from every builder comparison: a usable site of your own costs, in text, photos, structure and finishing, typically two to four full working days, and they are yours. The €25 per month is a calculation assumption drawn from mid-range plans plus a domain, not the offer of a particular provider; the market corridors for running costs come from the price comparisons linked below and match the single published Carinthian maintenance price in my own survey.

When is a website builder genuinely enough?

When the website is a notice board and not a tool. Concretely: one to five pages, a contact form, opening hours, directions, a few photos, no connection to another system, no shop, no appointment booking, no second language. Plus the willingness to maintain the content yourself and the composure to live with a template that others use as well.

For that case a builder is not a compromise but the right route. It is finished the same day, costs little and can simply be left alone. Anyone who instead buys a built website and then does nothing with it is paying for possibilities nobody uses.

Where does a website builder end?

At four points, and usually later than expected. First, on speed: templates bring along scripts nobody needs, and that shows on a mobile connection. Second, on accessibility: since the Accessibility Act, many services on the internet face requirements a template does not meet automatically. Third, on integrations: as soon as an appointment, inventory or till system has to join in, the builder ends at an embedded third-party window. Fourth, on moving: content can usually be exported, the appearance and the structure cannot.

The most expensive case is not the builder itself but the builder used past its limit for three years. What waits at the end is a rebuild for which the content has to be rewritten anyway, and the €900 from the table is added to the cost of the second attempt.

What do you get in addition from a developer?

A site built for your process, and a person who stands behind it. That is unglamorous and makes the difference mainly at three points: the load time is a requirement rather than an accident, accessibility is built in from the start instead of retrofitted, and connecting to an existing system is an ordinary task rather than a special case.

Then there is the question of who owns what at the end. With a built website, the source code, the content and the access credentials sit with you after handover; you can run it yourself or hand it to somebody else. With a builder you rent a platform, and the site ends with the subscription. Which build variant within that route is the right one is covered in the article WordPress or custom-built.

When is a larger agency the right choice?

As soon as more than a website is needed. An agency brings photography, copy, campaigns and ongoing editorial work under one roof; anyone advertising regularly, needing material in print and online at the same time, or building a brand is in the right place there. The price for it is an extra layer between you and the implementation, plus a corridor that, according to my survey, starts at €2,200 to €4,500 for a multi-page website in Carinthia.

For a business that needs exactly one website and two changes a year afterwards, that layer is the most expensive part of the quote. This is not a criticism of agencies but a question of the size of the undertaking.

What do most comparisons overlook?

Your own time, and the second attempt. Almost every comparison online lines up starting prices and leaves open who writes the text, who takes the photos, who installs updates and who reacts when the site is unreachable on a Saturday. That is exactly where the difference between €5 and €100 per month in the price comparisons comes from: plain hosting means the server runs. Maintenance means somebody looks after it.

The second blind spot is the assumption that a decision lasts forever. In practice businesses switch after two to four years because the business itself has changed. Anyone who plans for that picks the route they can get out of again, and that argues for content and source code in your own hands.

How do you decide this in ten minutes?

With three questions that need no consultation. First: should the website do something, or show something? Second: is there a second system that has to join in, today or in two years? Third: who maintains the content, and does that person have the time? Twice “show, no, myself” means a builder. One “do” or one “second system” means a built website.

The full prices with no need to ask are at websites from €890 and in the price overview with the calculator; if you want the market comparison first, it is in the article what a website costs in Carinthia. For businesses that need an integration rather than a shop window, software development Klagenfurt is the better entry point.
